While it is important to compare cartridge pricing, it is equally important to learn about cartridge yields. Unless you are only printing occasionally, it is advantageous to purchase high capacity cartridges whenever available. To understand the true cost of printing, always inquire about the cartridge capacity or yield. Most printers, with a few exceptions, are designed to work with standard yield cartridges and high yield cartridges. Standard yield cartridges work well for infrequent printing and high yield cartridges are designed for heavy printing and busy offices. When you purchase a new printer, you will notice that the cartridge runs out quickly. This is because new printers almost always include a “starter” low yield cartridge. Here is an example on how to calculate and compare the cost of printing for HP Laserjet M404/M428 series printer:
If HP CF258A standard yield genuine toner costs $109.99, and it is designed to produce up to 3,000 pages, then when we divide the cost by the amount of pages, we will get the approximate cost per page printed (approximately 3.66 cents per page printed).
If HP CF258X high yield genuine toner costs $219.99, and it is designed to produce up to 10,000 pages, then when we divide the cost by the amount of pages, we will get a lower figure than its standard yield version (approximately 2.19 cents per page printed).
This can be calculated for all cartridges in all brands and makes!
